Hany Mikhail

Hany M. Mikhail, M.D., Au.D.

Doctor of Audiology

Clinical Director

In 1991, Dr. Hany M. Mikhail took over as the director of Audiology for the clinic. Since then, Dr. Hany has established himself as an elite audiologist in the United States. This credibility is earned from numerous journal articles, papers, and 2 thesis’ published in various mediums of the hearing health care world. Before moving to the United States, Dr. Hany earned his M.D. from Tanta University School of Medicine in Montgomery, Egypt and a master’s degree in otorhinolaryngology from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. He was invited by the University of Kansas to perform academic research at the university’s medical center in 1983 in vestibular studies and encouraged to finish a second master’s degree in audiology and speech pathology from The University of Central Missouri in 1990. Upon finishing his second master’s degree, he began practicing in Joplin, Missouri as the director of audiology for Area Hearing and Speech Clinic. In 2000, he was a part of the inaugural class to graduate with his doctorate in audiology from Arizona School of Health Sciences. In 2006, Dr. Hany took over as the owner of Area Hearing & Speech Clinic. His current work has focused on adult and geriatric audiology, with emphasis on the latest trends in technology as well as hearing conservation in industrial settings throughout the area.

Dr. Hany lives in Joplin with his wife Donna and their maltipoo Winston. He and his wife are active in their church and community.

Jonathan A. Mikhail

Jonathan A. Mikhail, Ed.D., Au.D., M.S.

Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Jonathan Mikhail is a clinical research audiologist from Joplin, Missouri. He graduated with his Master of Science degree in 2015 from The University of Wisconsin-Stout in Technical and Professional Communication, emphasizing behavioral methods, in 2018 from Wichita State University with his Doctor of Audiology, and in 2023 with his Doctor of Education from A.T. Still University where he graduated with high honors. His research, both for his master's and first doctorate, has focused on communication abilities and tactics for people who are hard of hearing of all ages and the number of communication courses offered in current audiology programs in the United States. His doctoral dissertation in 2023, “Does COVID-19 Exacerbate Pre-existing Hearing Loss,” was published in the April 2024 edition of The Hearing Review. Dr. Mikhail has presented extensively throughout the country and internationally on topics including COVID-19, auditory processing disorders, and the future of private practice in audiology. Dr. Mikhail also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Wichita State University in the Doctor of Audiology program. His interests in audiological practice include aural rehabilitation, pediatric assessments, educational audiology, hearing conservation, and counseling.

Dr. Samantha Dewey, Au.D

Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Sammy Dewey is a clinical audiologist who completed her Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2021 and her Doctor of Audiology in 2024. Her doctoral capstone research focused on insight from parents of children with hearing loss, and the resources provided to them following their child’s diagnosis. In the clinic, Dr. Dewey specializes in educational audiology, auditory processing disorder, aural rehabilitation, and vestibular evaluations/rehabilitation.

Dr. Sammy was diagnosed with hearing loss at birth, and has been a hearing aid user since the age of 3 months old, giving her a unique perspective growing up as a child and living as an adult with a disability. She loves working with individuals of all ages and is dedicated to challenging the negative perception surrounding hearing aids.

Dr. Sammy lives in Joplin, Missouri with her dog and cat. In her spare time, she enjoys various activities such as house projects, binging TV shows, and hiking with her dog.

Samuel Christensen

Samuel Christensen, AAA-HIS

Hearing Instrument Specialist

Sam Christensen joined the Area Hearing and Speech Clinic team in 2013 as our in-house technician and later went on to become our Hearing Instrument Specialist in 2019. Mr. Christensen specializes in fitting and dispensing hearing aids, using Real Ear Verification for all patients, customizing patient care for individualized therapy, and counseling patients on their hearing health goals. Currently, Mr. Christensen lives in Carthage, Missouri with his wife and three children. He is an avid carpenter and in his spare time enjoys working with hands.
