Vestibular Testing

Comprehensive Balance System Evaluation

Vestibular testing assesses the function of the inner ear balance system, known as the vestibular system. This system works with your eyes and muscles to help maintain balance, stability, and clear vision during movement. Our clinic uses advanced, non-invasive testing to determine how well this system is working and to identify possible causes of dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance.

What to Expect

Vestibular testing includes a series of assessments that may measure eye movements, balance responses, and inner ear function. Depending on your symptoms, your evaluation may include:

  • Videonystagmography (VNG) – tracks eye movements to assess inner ear function.
  • Rotational chair testing – evaluates how your eyes and ears work together during motion.
  • Positional tests – identify vertigo caused by head position changes
  • Caloric testing – gently stimulates the ear to assess each ear’s balance response.
  • Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) – measures reflexes from inner ear structures

Why Vestibular Testing Is Important

The vestibular system plays a critical role in maintaining balance and orientation. When it's not functioning correctly, you may experience dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness. Vestibular testing helps:

  • Identify the cause of dizziness or imbalance
  • Differentiate between ear-related and other medical causes
  • Guide individualized treatment or vestibular rehabilitation therapy.
  • Track progress and recovery over time

Accurate vestibular assessment allows our clinicians to develop personalized care plans that help you regain stability and confidence in daily life.

Common Disorders Identified Through Vestibular Testing

Vestibular testing can help diagnose a variety of balance and inner ear conditions, including:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular Neuritis
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Menière’s Disease
  • Bilateral or Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction
  • Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence (SSCD)
  • Perilymph Fistula
  • Central Vestibular Disorders, such as vestibular migraine
